CPR - Step 9

Use an AED

Before you touch the person, you must assess the environment.
And check if:

- If there is an AED available, turn it on and follow the prompts it gives. It will give you step by step instructions on what to do..

- Ensure that the person’s chest is exposed and dry

- Put the AED pads on the person

- One pad goes on the upper right chest

- The second pad goes on the lower chest on the left near the side of the ribcage

For smaller children or infants, use pediatric pads if available

- One pad goes on the front and one on the back

- Yell “Clear!” while the AED is analyzing.

- Make sure that there is nobody touching the person when the AED analyzes the heart rhythm or delivers a shock

- The the AED says to give the shock, Yell “Clear!” and make sure no one is touching the person and then press the shock button, after ensuring it is safe to.

- Once the shock is delivered, resume CPR immediately with chest compressions

- Even if no shock is advised, still continue CPR once it is safe.
