CPR - Step 7

Provide Rescue Breaths

- AFTER the airway is open, give 2 rescue breaths.

- For adults and children:

- First pinch the the nose.

- Create a seal over the person’s mouth with your own.

- Or with the pocket mask.

Place the mask over the person’s nose and mouth:

- The pointed end goes over the bridge of the nose.

- The wider end covers the mouth and chin.

Ensure that the mask has created a tight seal over the mouth and nose - it must do this in order for the breaths to be given properly.

- Ensure that the mask has created a tight seal with this hand placement:

- Place your thumb and index finger on the top of the mask, forming a “C” shape

- Use your other three fingers to lift the jaw upward, forming an “E” shape on the side of the face.

- Deliver each breath over approximately 1 second, watch to see if the chest rises.

Emergency CPR Help

- For infants:

- Provide gentle puffs of air, so that the chest rises.

- If the chest does not rise with a breath, reposition the head and attempt again

- If the chest still does not rise, it is possible that the airway is blocked.
